At 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5 a message was sent out to Gaither families informing that Gaither’s first playoff game versus Osceola High School had been canceled. This left many questions as to why the game was canceled and where Gaither stands in the playoff of their first undefeated season.

The game was officially canceled for Osceola to mourn the loss of one of their students who passed the weekend prior to a tragic boating accident.

“Condolences to faculty, staff, and students at Osceola Highschool on the loss of one of their students over the past weekend. Our deepest sympathy and condolences on your loss,” tweeted the Gaither High School official Twitter.

Sophomore varsity football player, Kobe Bender, comments on the cancellation of the game.

“I can’t really speak for everyone but I would have loved to see the game played but after the tragedy the Osceola team faced with the boat accident I think the forfeit was the right decision,” said Bender.

The cancellation had its consequences as it heavily impacted both schools’ standings in the playoffs.

“The school technically forfeit the game so we will advance to the next round of the playoffs,” said Bender.

Bender also mentioned that, “the forfeit will result in Osceola being eliminated from the playoffs.”

As Gaither now advances, the next playoff game will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13 against the Seminole Warhawks.
