Monday night, the Gaither boys’ soccer team hosted the Alonso Ravens in the first game of the regular season. The Cowboys finished with a win, adding to their now 2-0-1 record, after playing in a preseason tournament.

Freshman left mid Juan Ramirez for the Cowboys had several great opportunities to score, but his numerous shots on goal were well defended by the Ravens’ goalkeeper.

In the seventeenth minute of the first half, Ramirez passed to junior right mid Jose Flores who scored with a header. In the twenty-fifth minute of the second half, senior striker Samuel Maldonado battled his way to the goal box and passed to fellow senior striker Ronnie Mendoza for the goal.

Gaither kept Alonso from maintaining any significant possession, only allowing them to score once in the last few minutes of regulation. The Ravens could not overtake the dominant presence of the Cowboys, resulting in a Cowboy victory.

Gaither heads to Strawberry Crest High School for a non-conference game next Tuesday.
