On Friday, May 11, the Gaither Cowboys’ football team took the field at Death Valley Stadium for the first time in five months for the annual Blue vs. Grey scrimmage. The teams were evenly divided by the coaches, but the Blue Team came out on top, winning 19-3.

The Blue Team’s offense was led by junior quarterback Shaye Scott and the Grey Team’s offense was led by Steinbrenner transfer and sophomore quarterback Tony Bartalo. The two are in competition for the starting spot.

The game ran like any regular season matchup and gave the coaches an idea of what to expect for the season in the fall. Several players were able to showcase their skills and athleticism during the scrimmage.

For example, sophomore linebacker Hunter Mintzer has taken over the responsibility of place kicking and punting. Mintzer was on the Blue Team’s defense but took care of punting, PATs, place kicking and kickoffs for both teams. He made a PAT, field goal, and caused the Grey Team to fumble, allowing junior linebacker Adam Valdes to score a defensive TD.

Another standout was Chris Meadors, a transfer student from South Carolina who made his presence known. Scott, scrambled his way down and back the line of scrimmage until finally passing the ball to Meadors, who gained around 40 yards and a first down. Meadors would go on to score a TD in the fourth quarter of the game.

There were some great moments that gave head coach Kirk Karsen a lot of confidence in his team.

“We’re going to be a really tough, physical football team. The defense played good bend-not-break defense… when your defense is strong and fast you’re going to win a lot of football games,” Karsen said.

Karsen is looking forward to next season and has expectations of strength and success.
