The Gaither Cowboys’ baseball team (12-7) hosted the Jefferson Dragons (13-6) on Tuesday, April 17. Heading into the game, Jefferson was 8-0 on the road. The Cowboys, overcoming a slow start, won at home and broke the Dragons’ streak.

Gaither struggled on the mound during the first and second inning. Senior pitcher, Anthony Alvarez, allowed five hits (each accounting for at least one RBI) and two HBPs.

With a score of 6-6 heading into the third inning, junior pitcher Javier Deyun stepped in to take over. Jefferson was only able to score once before heading back onto the field.

Deyun stacked up the first two outs in the fourth inning with back-to-back strikeouts and allowed just two runs. Gaither turned up the heat in the bottom of the fourth with four hits and three RBIs, tying the score to nine-all. Jefferson did not score again until the seventh inning.

Unlike the Dragons, the Cowboys maintained great success behind the plate with 13 total RBIs and exceptional base running stealing 11 bases. Jefferson had a very hard time defending the steal on second base for the entire game.

Jefferson tried their hardest to stop Gaither from getting on base, changing pitchers a total of four times. Despite the multiple pitching changes, the Cowboys dominated the Dragons with a final score of 15-10.

Standout Players: Junior Derek Crum, left field: three hits, four RBIs, two runs. Senior Danny Gutcher, catcher: three hits, one RBI, four runs. Senior Orlando Arevalo, shortstop: four hits, two RBIs, three runs.
