The Gaither (2-2) softball team shutout the Spoto Spartans (0-5) at home on Saturday morning, stacking up 18 runs by the second inning and forcing the game to be mercy ruled.

The Cowboys started the first inning strong, thanks to freshman pitcher Belle Sardja with three straight strike-outs.

Gaither flew ahead of the Spartans in the first inning going through the entire batting order twice, bringing in a whopping 16 runs.

Eight out of the 16 runs were RBIs: Sardja accounted for one. Senior catcher Caitlin Minor brought in four, hitting a triple to left field and a line drive double. Senior first baseman Sydney Gillespie hit a couple dingers down the third base line bringing in two runners. Senior left fielder Melissa Speciale and sophomore outfielder Julia Barlow each brought in one.

Consistent errors and pitching were the downfall for the Spartans, allowing home to be stolen six times and two runs scored from bases-loaded walks.

Exceptional fielding and solid pitching by the Cowboys kept Spoto from scoring yet again. The Cowboys scored two runs before collecting their second and third out due to runners leaving their bases early.

Gaither fielded their way to the first out and Sardja pitched back to back straight strikeouts to end the inning and the game. The final score was 18-0.
