Gaither is heading into Week 2 of the season 0-1, after losing to the Chamberlain Chiefs.

A combination of turnovers and loss of yards proved to be the Cowboys downfall Monday night during the Carrollwood Classic.

The Chiefs had a strong first drive.  They pushed their way to third down but were stopped by Cowboy linebacker Brysen Roth, forcing an unsuccessful field goal attempt.

A Cowboy turnover allowed the Chiefs to score a TD and extra point with 5:48 left in the first quarter.

The home offense started the second quarter with a 13 yard pass to fullback Marlon Howard.  Running back Jeromy Reed broke away from the defense and stiff armed the secondary for a 41-yard gain with a key block coming from wide receiver Cayden Jordan.

With 6:30 left in the second quarter, cornerback and wide receiver Ethan Thomas picked off a deep ball and was stopped at Gaither’s 10 yard-line.  The Cowboys did not capitalize on the opportunity.

The Chiefs responded with an interception of their own, 10 yards from the end zone.  The score was 14-0 heading into the locker room.

The second half was peppered with successful run plays and false start penalties.

The Cowboy offense struggled with bad field position for the majority of the half.

The home defense held the Chiefs to four downs, with Cowboy defensive back Collin McGinnis knocking down a pass in the end zone. The Chiefs were able to score a field goal.

The Chiefs took a knee on their last possession, ending the game at 17-0, Chamberlain.
