While COVID-19 has led to the cancellation of many sport related activities, many youth and school sports groups have announced practices and other sporting events will resume once again.
Players and athletes will be able to play as long as they meet the required conditions, which can vary based on who and where the activities are held.
It has been confirmed by the CDC, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that school sports like football will be allowed for the 2020-2021 school year. Students who play for the school will be required by the CDC to have their temperature checked each week and coaches are to report symptomatic athletes.
Requirements are subject to change depending on the status of COVID-19 closer to the start of the fall season.
Some Students are very eager to come back to playing sports having been unable to play for the last two months.
“I’m really happy things are starting to get back to normal because I missed playing sports. All gyms are also following the guidelines. For example, every time I go to the YMCA gyms they have to check my temperature before going in,” said Freshman Alejandro Cekan.
The CDC recommended adjusted workouts and focuses to ensure player and coach safety, proposing that, “coaches can modify practices so players work on individual skills, rather than on competition. Coaches may also put players into small groups that remain together and work through stations, rather than switching groups or mixing groups.”
“You can check temperatures all you want at the end of the day. You can be symptomatic and hold no signs of being positive. Life will continue with sports, we just have to be careful with our players. No sharing of anything and contact has to be only on the field of play. Hand shakes at the end of the game might have to be elbow bumps, we just have to be smart with what we do with the contact part of sports,” said Coach Trevor Scott.
With the implementation of modified practices, safe distances and cautious behavior students will be able to not only watch their favorite school sports, but participate in them once again.
