Changes to Class of 2020 Graduation

The coronavirus has led to the cancellation of school as well as many special events. Currently, Gaither has postponed the seniors graduation ceremony and it is to be held two months after it was initially planned.

The new date is Wednesday, July 15 at 9 a.m. at the Florida State Fairgrounds expo hall.

This new graduation date has upset some seniors who are forced to cancel their summer plans to attend their graduation, others are glad that, despite corona, they still get their ceremony.

“I expected graduation to get postponed, especially since there would have been 1000+ people attending. I was more bummed out about prom being cancelled because it is an event where you spend more time with your friends and have fun,” said senior Luis Cekan.

The ceremony is rumored to have to follow CDC guidelines like being tested and remaining six feet apart. If the coronavirus continues to prevent large gatherings like a  graduation, a virtual ceremony has been suggested, something many seniors have been opposed to.

“Personally i feel like it’s fine they cancelled it, I was scared that we were gonna have a weird virtual graduation, but when I found out that we were gonna have a real graduation ceremony in July I was really happy because every senior deserves to be seen and recognized for the hard work they’ve put in, especially the honor circle and the valedictorian who have put in more time and effort to be the top of our class,” said senior Jose Flores.

Even with strict guidelines and an adjusted graduation, Gaither seniors will receive their diploma and will be able to celebrate graduating high school before they continue their life after high school.
