Jane Castor was sworn in as the mayor of Tampa this morning. Castor recently won the mayoral election against fellow Democratic candidate and local philanthropist David Straz. As the former Chief of Police, Castor is well-known across the city and across Hillsborough County. She served at the Tampa Police Department for 31 years.

Castor plans to do what she can to move the Rays baseball team to Tampa. She wants to expand public transportation, help create more affordable housing, and take charge of the city’s environmental situation, as well as a variety of other reforms.

Castor makes history as the first openly gay mayor to be elected in Tampa. Castor’s two adoptive sons, Sealy and Sergei Bevon, graduated from Gaither in 2017. Since she is a record-breaking elect, many Tampa residents are curious as to what else she may accomplish during her upcoming term in office.
