As the first quarter is now behind us, many students are realizing that some AP classes may be harder than they expected. AP classes can be very beneficial to students and their GPA, but when choosing these courses many do not realize how challenging they can be.

Recently many students have tried to drop out of an AP class because they are finding that they cannot handle the workload and curriculum. Unfortunately, guidance counselors must deny these requests due to the way AP teachers are hired and paid. AP teachers get paid by the number of students in their classes. Switching people out of their classes would mean the school is paying the teachers more than needed.

With students forced to remain in these classes that are too difficult for them, grades have begun to drop, and many students have lost all motivation to even try to succeed.

“My intelligence is not at the level APUSH requires and that class is a huge struggle for me,” said junior Dominic Fenno, one student who was denied a switch out of AP U.S History.

Teachers will continue to inspire and motivate students who are struggling and be of help in any way.

There is no sign of this policy being changed any time soon, so students must remain in these AP classes and try to give it their all.
