Deadlines for college applications are one of the many things lingering over the heads of juniors and seniors at the beginning of the school year. Students can find these deadlines on the internet, as well as dates for the standardized tests most schools require for admission.

The nearest application deadline for in-state universities is the University of Florida, on Nov. 1. The next closest is at the start of the new year: University of Miami, Jan. 1; Florida State University, Jan. 15; Rollins College, Feb 15; University of South Florida, March 1.

As of Oct. 1, students may file their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Those who apply earliest are granted certain aid like institutional and state grants and federal work-study dollars. The window for application closes on June 30, 2019.

Gaither is offering the PSAT tomorrow during school. Underclassmen can take this test in preparation for the SAT, which they will take in their junior or senior year. Juniors are encouraged to take this test to be entered in to the National Merit Scholar Competition. Finalists for this competition are offered a $2500 scholarship, corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards, and college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards.

The SAT will be offered at school for free in March. Students may take the test as many times as they like to achieve their highest score. However, students will be charged a testing fee for additional attempts.

The competition to get into college is a tough one. The chances of being accepted and granted scholarship money is dependent on the initiative of the students applying. Informational forms regarding recommendation letters, community service hours and test registration dates are available in the guidance office.
