Here at Gaither, students and faculty are not afraid to go out into the community and help others. Many students from the music department have gone to local nursing homes and performed for the residents as a way to brighten their day with musical entertainment.

This past winter, a group of choral students sang at the Jaime’s Adult Day Care Center that left a lasting impression on many of them.

“We sang and performed classic Christmas music like Jingle Bells, Rudolf the Reed Nose Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman back in December. And it was so sweet because some of the people started to sing along and a lot of them were clapping. Also they gave a bunch of us hugs afterwards which I thought was really cute,” said Katherine George, junior.

Orchestra students go to living facilities, as well, performing more modern pieces.

“We perform at a place called Brighton Garden and we play music like Disney songs, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and some pop songs. At the end, [the residents] always clap and applaud. They seem like they always really enjoy it. It felt great to perform for them because I knew that it was a good thing to do,” said Anthony Reyes, freshman.

Students can also volunteer to go to nursing homes in the area to cheer them up and to brighten up the area. You don’t need musical talents. You can go visit to read using books they might have read back in their day, or to help them with setting up their phones so they don’t get frustrated. Just going out there and visiting can do a lot because they don’t get to see a lot of people. Visiting can make their day and possibly yours.
