On Friday, Feb. 23. Gaither High School held the annual Special Olympics event for Hillsborough County, where the ESE programs from all different schools come together to participate in athletic events.

The day went off without a hitch, from the beginning of the organized sports to the dismissal of the numerous schools. There was plenty for participants and volunteers to do including sporting events and club-sponsored activity booths.

Events began with the descent of paratroopers from the sky as the Pledge of Allegiance was being performed. Crowds cheered in applause as they landed onto the field of Death Valley. There were numerous characters dancing and taking pictures with kids, including celebrities such as Spiderman, Batman, Thor and Star Wars Stormtroopers.

Those attending could expect activities including face painting, coloring, name tag making, fishing games, and plenty more provided by booths set up on the tennis court. ” Working at the [S.W.A.T.] booth allowed me to not be subjected to just one buddy, but be able to talk and interact with all buddies,” said Alexis Moore, junior. As the day went on people lined up for food, drinks, and snacks distributed from the concession stand including burgers provided from McDonald’s and hot dogs fresh off the grill.

Gaither students enjoyed the special honor of hosting and participating in the annual event, and can look forward to participating again next year.
