Betsy Torres, a psychology teacher at Gaither High School, has decided to assign her students the Genius Hour Project.

The Genius Hour Project is a movement that allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time during school. The students are required to create some kind of original product and conduct experiments using those products.

Torres’s students will be working on their individual projects for a set amount of time in class until May 8, 2018. The students will be presenting their ideas to the class, and many AP’s at Gaither will be attending as well.

Many students love the idea of this project because it gives them a chance to show off their creativity and originality. They also like the idea of changing up their typical day of class to something a little more fun and interesting.

Junior Sophia Coker, a student of Torres, was very fond of the assignment. “I think the project gives everyone a chance to learn about a new topic that isn’t taught in school which is pretty cool,” said Coker.

Some students are hesitant, though.

“The negatives are that this project is very time-consuming. But I feel that if I spend more time on this, it would help my overall results and make my project better,” said senior Jake Martin.

Torres assigned this project in hopes of getting back creative results from her students. Torres got this idea from a friend and thought it would be a fun, productive way to teach her students some important skills.

“I want my students to learn time management skills, organization and public speaking. I am extremely proud of them so far and excited to see where this project will take them,” said Torres.

This use of the Genius Hour Project will determine how and if this method will be utilized in the future.
