Last Thursday February 9, Gaither held their yearly Special Olympics event where students with intellectual development disabilities from all around Hillsborough County, come to Gaither for an all-day field event they participate in events like arts and crafts, 100 meter dash, track walks and long shot throws.

This event serves as an opportunity for students to participate in different events.
‘’for some of the special needs students it’s the only field trip they get to have,’’ stated Mrs. Fishburne, host of the event and Gaithers Best Buddies club sponsor.

Nearly everyone in the school participates, from student’s all grades including, band performers, and chorus performers, ROTC cadets, Fuego Latina performs a pre-view for their upcoming assembly and many teachers get involved, as well.
Clubs participate with individual club booths that provide games and prizes for the students to take part in, giving them time to bond and get to know one another.

‘’it’s my favorite part of the event my buddies are always so sweet,’’ says junior, Laureana Rocha-permenter.
It’s an event that definitely means a lot to the visiting students and an experience like no other for students from Gaither. Special Olympics is all-day event that brings tons of smiles.
